What to Expect if you Work at BLF
Welcome to our family farm. As a family business, we insist on a courteous, kid-friendly environment. At BLF, our barn culture is based on two simple principles; safety and respect. Safety is critical in a farm setting and when working with horses and other people. Respect for self, other people, animals, equipment and our environment makes BLF a fun and safe place for our customers to be with friends, both human and animal.

We have long-time customers and our riders are a fun mix of ages and backgrounds. A horse farm is in the service industry (everyone is a customer) and therefore we must always present well and treat everyone with respect. With this in mind, this is what you can expect:

  • Safety: Please keep safety in mind at all times. Ask questions if you are unclear of barn protocol/procedures. Please keep in mind that earrings and facial piercing can get caught in horses’ swishing tails. Please leave such jewelry at home.
  • Hours: The morning shift starts at 8 am, unless otherwise arranged with Lisa. Morning shift hours are likely to be from 8 am to 1:00 pm and sometimes, 2:00. Occasionally, there are special projects. Lunch breaks are unpaid. Hours may shift with the change of seasons. Positions are part-time, no benefits.
  • Dress: Even though it’s a barn, appropriate dress is a must. This goes back to safety. No tank tops or low-cut clothes. Appropriate footwear and layers of clothing are needed for the various seasons. Absolutely no flip-flops, Crocks or open toed shoes, as serious injuries can result if you were to get stepped on. Leather or sturdy boots/shoes are the most ideal.
  • Weather: Be prepared for anything. You will need to be able to work in extreme heat, extreme mud and extreme cold. You will need to provide your own coats, boots and gloves.
  • Cell Phones: Please limit your cell phone use and texting to emergencies during working hours. Cell coverage is not very good.
  • No Smoking, No Drinking, No Drugs. We reserve the right to require drug testing.
  • Being able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds is an essential function of the job. We are not able to make any accommodations. Grain bags are 50 lbs and hay bales may be more.
  • Greet all customers, volunteers and co-workers in a friendly manner. Keep conversations kid-friendly. Parents trust we provide a safe and nurturing environment for their children and teens.
  • Although a child-friendly farm, please do not bring children, family, friends or pets with you to work.

Bi-weekly (every other week) paycheck through a payroll service. Please be sure that hours are submitted at the end of the work day on each Monday prior to pay days.
